《遺留搜查》以警視廳刑事部搜查一課第一強行犯搜查科學搜查科為舞台，上川隆也在劇中扮演的是搜查主任、警部補糸村聰，是一名擁有著非凡魅力的“少年”刑警。
在通常情況下的科學搜查當中，鑑識人員都是通過分析遺留物品來找出決定性的證據，抓捕犯人，而糸村聰則是通過分析被害者生前留下的“被害物品”來對犯人進行徹底的追查。為了收集情報，糸村聰經常會為提供情報者送上一些東西，所以他會經常缺錢，而為了省出交通費，糸村聰還喜歡使用自行車。在斷案的過程當中，糸村聰憑藉著其如少年一般的笑容和率直以及強烈的信念贏得了大家的信賴，溫暖被害者家屬、朋友和愛人的心，用自己的真誠一次又一次地解決著各類複雜的案件。
除了上川隆也以外，貫地谷詩穗梨、佐野史郎、大杉漣等眾多實力派演員也將會在劇中飾演重要的角色。主題曲方面將會起用MISIA的敘事聲樂曲《記憶》，這也是MISIA首次為朝日電視台播出日劇演唱主題曲。
